\n <\/p>\nThe Establishment of Ginza Pedestrian Zone<\/h2>\n
The Ginza Pedestrian zone\uff08vehicle-free promenade\uff09is an area that covers Ginza-dori Street (Chuo-dori 1-chome to 8-chome) where vehicles are prohibited from passing, and it is open only to pedestrians on weekends (Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays).
\nSuch pedestrian zone were first established in the Ginza, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Asakusa districts of Tokyo on August 2nd, 1970, at the suggestion of then-Governor Ryokichi Minobe.
\nDuring Japan\u2019s postwar period of rapid economic growth, there were increasing concerns about environmental issues such as traffic congestion and air pollution caused by the sudden increase in the number of automobiles. The establishment of these pedestrian zones, in which people were allowed to walk on roadways for the first time, was seen as a reflection on the prevailing attitude at the time that vehicles took precedence over people.
\nToday, to commemorate the establishment of this pedestrian zone, the Holiday Promenade Yukata de Gin-bura Festival<\/a><\/u> is held every August on Ginza-dori Street as a way to provide visitors to Ginza with a fun summer day.
