Ginza Display Contest

The winners of this year’s Ginza Display Contest have been announced.
The Ginza Display Contest is an annual event with a history of some 30 years. Each year all the shop displays in Ginza are evaluated during the Christmas season when the shop displays are the most spectacular.

Ginza Display Contest 2017: Overall Evaluation

Head of the Ginza Display Contest Judging Committee
Masayuki Yamada (Japan Design Space Association)

This year, 86 excellent illumination displays from all over Ginza were nominated and the best were selected for prizes.

Expressed most vividly in the total transformation of Ginza 6-Chome, the Ginza landscape changed dramatically this year, with many new and renovated shops and with bright and lively displays all over the district.
In addition to the prominent illumination displays and art installations that continued to greet us as what are now familiar and wonderful seasonal sights, we were also left awe-inspired by the elaborate window displays that made passersby stop and look a little closer, discovering the brilliance of hand-crafted work. There was also an increase in the number of interactive displays with lights, videos, and movements that changed when you touched the device, full of gimmicks that titillated our human senses.
The Ginza displays that mix special tricks and attractive features matched to the size of the storefront and the location seemed to strongly draw people into the district.

The shops in Ginza have been operating for many years and put up highly sophisticated displays. They have passed down the concepts of ‘unwavering excellence’ and ‘distinctive Ginza flavor;’ rather than simply maintaining traditions as is, they continue to evolve their impressive quality with tireless ingenuity.
Long-standing brand shops have taken this as an opportunity to update their display areas and strike forth with even more refined endeavors. This could also be seen from the early addition of new technologies and elements seen this year, like social media-compatible, interactive art, and urea crystals, for example, incorporated to take the spaces to an even higher level of magnificence.

As Ginza persists in its evolution, we can strongly recognize both the unwavering excellence and distinctive Ginza flavor that are being fostered anew. We hope Ginza will continue to inspire and draw in people from all over the world.
