The founder left his hometown in Echigo (Niigata) to start a noren (traditional Japanese fabric divider)-dyeing business in Edo (Tokyo).
The business developed and he started to deal in silk/cotton kimono. Eventually Echigoya was founded when he opened a kimono store by the name in Kyobashi Minami-denma-cho in 1755.
The store was moved to the present location by the second owner. More than 250 years after the establishment, the colors and patterns unique to Echigoya are now inherited by the eighth successor.

Hiranoya was founded in 1808 (the late Edo period).
Hiranoya was initially opened in Nihonbashi as a shop for Japanese sword fittings (such as menuki ornaments and kozuka handles), but after the decree banning the wearing of swords in 1876, it began dealing with hipsack and bags.
The shop moved to Ginza in 1934, began devoting its efforts to tailoring and selling items such as women’s handbags, purses, and netsuke sculptures, as well as restoring armor and old saraça (calico) imports bags.
