Commentary on Ginza Display Contest 2022

Ginza Display Contest Evaluation Committee Chair
Masayuki Yamada (Japan Design Space Association)

This year, 88 outstanding shop displays from throughout Ginza were nominated and selected for these awards.

The face of the Ginza district is in a state of change right now, with shops being replaced and more buildings with large frontage currently under construction. The flow of people coming to Ginza, including visitors from abroad, has also started to return, creating a very warm mood for the area overall. The displays’ gentle colors, rounded outlines, and sustainability were all expressed with a sense of familiarity and humanity, and each was carefully crafted, properly positioned, and spoke to us from even the smallest of details.

Looking at the townscape, there are more and more places that use the visuals of the building facade up to the second and third floors, or even the entire building. Such displays open up the space of Ginza and brighten it, as they encourage people to look up and around and not just into shop windows.
Additionally, the design and staging of spaces that are not open for business and the use of artwork on the temporary enclosures set up during construction create an atmosphere that is unique to Ginza, and I feel that such efforts are contributing to the revitalization of the district.

VR has been used in recent years, and can also be seen everywhere in Ginza, which has created new forms of communication. We have thus reaffirmed the importance of going back to the fundamental starting point of communication, which is people actually visiting the area to see and feel the real thing.

The diversity of the displays in Ginza, and the fun to be had in finding the highlights, was truly heartwarming and encouraging, and I felt a very positive energy of the times moving forward.
I think the appeal of Ginza is that it’s a place where you can have this kind of experience.
At a time with such strife around the world, these displays serve to remind us of how grateful we should be that people are able to live peacefully, see things, and feel joy and excitement here in Ginza, Japan.
We look forward to seeing the ongoing fun, brightness, and strength of Ginza in the future as well.
